David Bowie is the second studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released under that title by Philips in the UK, and as Man of WordsMan of Music by Mercury in the US, on 14 November 1969. It was reissued in 1972 by RCA Records as Space Oddity the title of the opening track, which had reached No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart. Space Oddity was the name used for releases of the album in 1984, 1990, and 1999, but it reverted to the original, eponymous title for 2009 and 2015 reissues. The 2019. David Bowie - Space Oddity 1969. Redirected from Space Oddity song. Space Oddity is a song written and recorded by English singer-songwriter David Bowie. It was first released as a 7-inch single on 11 July 1969 before appearing as the opening track of his second studio album, David Bowie. Originally released as David Bowie in the UK and Man of WordsMan of Music in the US, David Bowies second album was reissued as Space Oddity in 1972. It was known under the name of its lead single by far the most famous song on the album on four subsequent releases, but from 2009 was released under its original name of David Bowie. Confusingly, so is Bowies 1967 début. Although the lead single hit 5 in the UK, and eventually reached 1 in 1975, the album was less successful, peaking at 17 in the UK and 16 in the US.
