I'm satisfied with the copy I received (it was the original preorder). It's got some surface noise that I can't seem to clean off, but it looks like I was fortunate enough to receive a copy that was close enough to being completely flat.
So did Sub Pop issue any sort of email statement about these? I decided to check mine and it's pretty massively warped and so I sent them a email and I'm waiting to hear back. Wish I saw this thread sooner!
I received my replacement in the mail yesterday and I'm definitely satisfied. It's tri-colored with the same colors like the original too.
so people are still flipping the prices, even if they have crappy warped copies to spare, Thanks.
Glad to hear replacements are finally coming! Also why are these already being resold for upwards of $150?? Aren't there like 10,000 copies?..
Replacements getting shipped now!
Have you gotten yours? and will it still be the same color???? I do not know that to expect, they should throw in another pop up cover also hahah
Did anyone ever end up getting their replacements?
Yeah, we'll see about that given subpops track record with this farce of a release
Just got an email saying they'll be shipping out around the first of May.
No, I still haven't gotten my replacements and it's been nearly 2 months..
I got the same response.
I'd send them an email asking where the replacement is. I got a nasty email response from their web team awhile ago when I emailed them asking them what to do about my copy and they responded saying they were figuring out what to do. I responded a day later asking where can I return it (before they announced the replacement), and they send me a 3 paragraph email laced with snide comments such as "you do realize we don't make the records ourselves and didn't know of the warping issue until customers started receiving their packages, hopefully?" and "hopefully you can understand that you are not the only person that has been affected by this super unfortunate manufacturing blunder," which I thought was really kind of nasty and I had to hold back from responding asking them why they don't open several records for quality control like any normal retailer/manufacturer of any product does.
I'm sorry if that seemed combative, I've just been fuming over it lately! Haha.
Oh, I completely agree, I am very disappointed and I'm very upset that SubPop still has artists that I like and that I am forced to support them after how poorly this is handled. I was simply pointing out that the "mid-march" date seemed unrealistic, and in no way saying thats an excuse.
I understand that, but for the reasons you mentioned I don't think a customer would be out of line for being upset. If mid-March was unrealistic, they shouldn't have declared it. I think the whole way SP handled the situation was piss poor. I mean, they pressed 10k-ish (big "ish") of what was meant to be a limited release. Then, after sending everyone defective (but still beautiful!) merchandise, proceed to pepper their apologies with jabs at the customer! Saying things like "we promise to never be this outgoing in the future." In my opinion that's bad business.
To be fair, the mid-March timeframe seems a little tight especially considering pressing plants are currently swamped with this vinyl revival, but I don't understand why SubPop would lie about the date and I find this to be the second disappointment in this mess of a pressing (wasn't a cheap purchase either)
I was just about to ask that myself. I've not heard of anyone getting theirs and SubPop hasn't published any news since the "Mid-March" estimate back in February. The disappointment is growing.
Yes, it has the midi player. Also, my copy plays just fine, so I'm wondering what was different between the many unplayable copies and the few that seem to be fine. Just a fluke I'd imagine, unless there is some slight variation no one has noticed yet.
My copy is playable, but warped.Maybe it would've been a better idea to have the pop-up be a separate book of sorts?
My copy plays fine and isn't warped at all. Guess, I lucked out. Still a mess for most :(
Mine is playable but still warped. Sub-Pop is replacing them next month.
Sub-Pop claims they will be "less ambitious" in the future with their releases. While I'm not happy that the release is arriving damaged, I don't think this should discourage them from being creative with LP releases. Hopefully they still place that creativity in future goals.
A farce of a pressing, would've been better just buying the standard edition. Even if the warped discs are replaced, it is the packaging that warped them so the discs can never be stored in the packaging anyways. Huge mess on the part of Sub Pop.
I would agree that is a reasonable concern. Especially after all the trouble for those waiting for a replacement, fully functional set of LP's. Perhaps a "DISCLAIMER" is in order.
To be clear it was NOT the unique case itself that caused the vinyls to become warped, the issue occurred once the item was to be shrink wrapped, at least according to Sub Pop as you can see here: "In short, the extra, bulging thickness of the pop-up art in the Father John Misty jacket creates a lump that, when the LPs are sealed and packed, pushes into the LPs, causing the vinyl to warp..." - f/ https://www.subpop.com/news/2015/02/11/on_the_subject_of_the_deluxe_lp_edition_of_father_john_mistys_i_love_you_honeybear(Select link to read further about the "FJM - I Love You, Honeybear" tri-color Deluxe Edition debacle from Sub Pop) That being said, when Sub Pop does send you the replacement LP's you would be able to store the new, non-warped copies safely.
I agree. I am personally hoping it was just the pressure of the shrink wrap that pressed the vinyl into the midi player hard enough to cause the warping. I still house my vinyls (thankfully not warped) in the gatefold and they've not become warped. However, I am too worried about putting it amongst my other records on my shelf for fear that they will put too much pressure on it.
Was it 10K pressed for this edition or 10K (total pressed) for the 3 different editions? It seems crazy to me that Sub Pop would press 10K for just this edition.
I asked them if it was for this specific release and they said yes. They were nasty about it too. They were like "we know what limited edition means."
My copy is unplayable. It's a real shame.
My copy is crap! Sub Pop says March for replacements.
Does this version also has the activated midi player like the Europe version?
Yes, it plays the music when you open the gatefold.
My copy is unplayable. Beautiful packaging though! Hopefully getting a replacement though Merchline isn't too much of a headache...
Same here! I'm hoping it works out and I get the replacement LPs
Both my discs have the Side A & B track list label. Anyone else?
That happened to me as well, but I was too distracted by the warped vinyl.
The pre-order page said it had "alternate artwork" - does anyone know if the mail pre-order has different artwork than the Deluxe/Limited available in shops?
The colors are different on deluxe covers
I believe the alternate artwork just refers to the inside of the jacket due to the pop up.
SUB POP just announced these to be discontinued until announced otherwise due to a warp defect. They are taking returns from store it was purchased. These might have gone up in value if urs isn't warped
No they are not pressing 10,000 more. I've talked with Sub Pop. "We're making a limited number of replacement LPs for those who alreadybought the record, but we're not going to be repressing the entirepackage/quantity."
I'm waiting to hear back on how many were sold before canceling orders
They're repressing 10k more to replace all of the warped ones
wow - 10k were pressed of the limited edition? That's a fair bit to press up. I'm guessing that they had to press 10K copies to make it affordable to make in the first place considering the amount of gimmicks included.
They told me on Twitter they were repressing them all. Tweet has since been deleted, they clearly realized how stupid that would be. Either way the value of this is shot because there'll be so many warped copies in circulation trying to be sold as "new" that people will be scared to invest.
No. They r ONLY repressing the ones returned by customers. U have no clue what u r talking about. I've talked to SubPop. They also stopped taking anymore orders of this deluxe pressing.
There'll be 20k copies of this once they repress it as well, granted a hefty amount of the first pressing were warped.
Sub Pop's site says that all LPs play at 45rpm but 45 is way higher-pitched than the MP3s and 33 1/3 plays in slow-mo....anyone else getting these problems?
Ha, that's why everything else plays fine?...
It's your turntable
It might be a little high but it's not that noticeable to me. I've also been listening to the leak on my phone with headphones compared to the vinyl coming through speakers... I'm just thankful my record isn't warped!
I did notice "Chateau Lobby #4" sounded a bit higher than I'm used to hearing on the radio. I just assumed it was because of the warp on the record.
it noticed the pitch was a bit high but nothing extremely distinct
Calling this "limited edition" is a bit of a reach on Sub Pop's behalf considering 10k copies of it were pressed. https://twitter.com/subpop/status/562714010085507072
Sounds like a heap of these were bust pressings — unplayably warped.
My lp1 was playable and the warp was still real. LP2 on the other hand was pretty good except for a little bump on side b but at that point I was just nit-picking.
I emailed SubPop yesterday. They replied that the manufacturer that installed the sound card used a glue that somehow wasn't dried properly or had some chemical reaction that caused the records to warp in one spot toward the edge, which is what I experienced. I bought mine directly from their site and they are replacing the discs (once they have replacements pressed). Not sure how they are handling those that were shipped to the thousands of record stores. What a mess!
Likely due to the soundbox inside pressing on the records too much.
Yeah... all three that the record store near me got were warped. Two of them still played fine, but I have yet to try my copy.
