Berserker is the sixth solo studio album by English musician Gary Numan, released on 9 November 1984, it was his first album to be released under Numan's own record label, Numa Records. Gary Numan's recording contract with his previous record label Beggars Banquet had ended with the release of 1983's Warriors album, and disillusioned with record companies, Numan decided to create his own record label, Numa Records, in order to give himself full control over his recordings, production work and marketing. The following year Numan recorded and released a solo album entitled The Pleasure Principle which reached Number one in the UK followed by a sold out tour. In 1980 Numan topped the UK charts with his Telekom album followed by another major tour however he announced to retire from touring. The retirement didnt last long. After experimenting with jazz, funk and rhythmic pop, he released Dance topping at Number 3 on the charts in the UK. Berserker by Gary Numan, released in 1984. I included bonus tracks from the Eagle Records reissue and the extended versions. Berserker, promising title and striking new personal image combining white skin covering and blue highlights aside, continued this curious trend, very much a dog's breakfast of sudden, striking ability and a surprising embrace of already shopworn clichés. If there's a specific contrast to be made, it's the difference between Numan's one-of-a-kind voice - often capturing a sense of melancholic passion better than ever - and all-too-obvious arrangements from the mid-'80s. Berserker, as a complete work is astounding. And held against even the best known acts of the time, this is an extremely mature album for a 24 year old to write. The title track could be released today and sound as fresh as it did then. It's a very well constructed piece that burns from the first chord, then completley slows up, expands, and then takes off again. I first heard this track in 1992 and it was the only song in a long time that actually had me smiling from ear to ear as I left my cd player on 'repeat' for nearly an hour
